# Solar Panel Aiming Guide

On any system that uses solar panels, it is important to properly aim the panels for optimal operation.

Do not put solar panels in a place where anything (trees, utility poles, bridges, buildings, etc.) will cast shade on the solar panel at any point during the **peak sun hours** (typically 9-10 AM to 4-5 pm) on the shortest day of the winter through the longest day of the summer.

There are a number of apps that can assist in determining the optimal aim.

*Since we’re in the northern hemisphere, panels should ALWAYS aim exactly to the South, not Southeast or Southwest, directly South.*
